Finding the perfect dress for Hollywood's award season can create mayhem for stylists and starlets alike. Just think of the timing alone…the Golden Globes fall mere weeks before fashion's couture season; ruling out the most coveted of dresses! While most frantic stylists clamor to secure their girls never-before-seen gowns, others look to the past for inspiration. Yes, going the vintage route can be risky, but it's a definite guarantee that your red carpet look will be one-of-a-kind and, well, available!
We hit up our resident vintage connoisseur, Cameron Silver, for his pick of the best vintage looks from awards season's past. With his new book, Decades: A Century of Fashion, Silver establishes himself as the last word in glamour from every decade. And, though there may be some surprises on his list, there's no denying his style vocabulary and unparalleled knowledge of the red carpet. Enjoy.
Chloe Sevigny in vintage Holly Harp - Vanity Fair Oscar party 2002
One of my favorite dresses of all time! Designed in the 1970s by LA-based Holly Harp, Chloe chose this dress on the eve of a retrospective of Holly Harp designs that we had at Decades. I was committed to seeing this dress on the red carpet that year and after Chloe wore it my friend got married in it! It’s a lucky gown.
Heidi Klum in vintage Galanos - Golden Globes 2009
Heidi was one of the first stars to wear short to the Globes and I am always happy when local couturier James Galanos gets 21st century red carpet kudos. It was a bold choice and ultimately helped waive in the short party dress trend.
Julia Roberts in vintage Valentino - Oscars 2001
Direct from the Valentino archives, Julia really helped demystify the notion of “what is vintage” and this 80s era Valentino is totally timeless proving that vintage doesn’t always look vintage.
Julianna Marguiles in vintage YSL - Golden Globes 2011
Is there anything chicer than wearing vintage Yves Saint Laurent Haute Couture? Julianna’s stylist emailed me and said she wanted to put The Good Wife star in vintage and I gladly obliged.
Renee Zellwegger in vintage Jean Desses - Oscars 2001
One of my favorite red carpet looks. Although not from Decades, I will always give kudos to a great vintage moment and this was certainly Zellwegger’s greatest sartorial moment: poison yellow strapless goddess with Veronica Lake locks and tasteful bling. This is getting it so right and not trying too hard. Textbook chic.
