kirsten dunst

Kirsten Dunst is BULLETT Magazine's Spring covergirl. In an editorial shot by Frederik Heyman, the UpsideDown star showcases the latest collection from California couturier, Rodarte, while navigating a futuristic set of smoke and mirrors. Starworks Artists handled all aspects of the actresses beauty story, making Kirsten Dunst the newest edition to our Starworks360 club!

Below we have styling notes from hairstylist Adir Abergel, makeup artist Kate Lee and fashion stylist Cher Coulter who worked on the project.

kirsten dunst

This was a dream job! Not only was it a pleasure to work with Kirsten Dunst, who in my eyes is a fashion icon and brilliant actress, but it was exciting to be up close and personal with so much of the Spring Rodarte collection. On top of this, BULLETT Magazine is one of the most innovative magazine on new stands right now.

Starworks Artists fashion stylist Cher Coulter

My inspiration came from the days of grunge during the early-90s. I gave Kirsten's hair a great wet & shiny 2nd-day look, slicked back on one side. I allowed the rest of the hair to fall around the slicked back section which gave the look a very modern graphic look. All the clothing for the shoot was from Rodarte's latest collection. The look I created was a very strong look that played very well with the lines of the clothing.

Starworks Artists hairstylist Adir Abergel

The set on the shoot for Bullett Magazine was pretty impressive, featuring a lot of mirrors, rock and steel. The overall feel was industrial and somewhat space age. Most of what you see in the pictures was not there on the day we shot so I was really excited to see the final pictures. I think they look amazing!

Because the set was so cool toned, I wanted to embrace Kirsten as the only color on set. Her hair is a great variation of blond and I decided that a bronze/gold metallic liquid eye would be the perfect look for this shoot. I kept the rest of the face very neutral but defined and asked that the colour of her eye shadow be kept "true" even if the skin was being desaturated in the picture.

We've had a style crush on Rose Byrne ever since her breakout role as snobby-but-stunning villainess, Helen, in 2011's Bridesmaids. In the past two years, the Aussie actress has also proved herself a mighty force on the red carpet; stealing our fashion hearts by making the most daring outfits look effortless and chic. And, it seems we're not the only devotees...

Vogue.com has taken notice as well, placing Rose Byrne on their weekly Best Dressed List for her last four red carpet outings. We checked in with Byrne's stylist, Starworks Artists Penny Lovell, for her thoughts on each of these winning looks.

PENNY LOVELL: There was just something so effortless and cool about this pant suit from DVF but what made it truly red carpet was all the hand beading that made up the glittering bug pattern.

Balenciaga, I Give It a Year premiere

PL: I love this color on Rose. I love the soft draping at the neckline and the structured hip that gives way to the flowing skirt. The playful raised dots and gold detailing on hard shell Thale Blanc clutch in balance  with the two tone gold and black platform Charlotte Olympia shoes made this look fun, sophisticated. And despite the cold chill in London, it evoked Springtime.

Valentino, 2013 SAG Awards

rose byrne best dressed vogue three (photo courtesy of vogue.com)

PL: Rose loves florals and has an affinity for vintage and vintage inspired style. This flowy, pastel gown from Valentino Resort 2013 ticked both of those boxes. Because Rose was traveling to promote a film we had to have the dress tailoring in her room just hours before the event. When it was all done and she was dressed and ready to go, it was all so worth it.

Lanvin, Vanity Fair Oscar Party

rose byrne best dressed vogue four (photo courtesy of vogue.com)

PL: Vanity Fair Party you can take a few more risks and maybe have a little more fun with the look.  If you were to quickly glance at the description on paper, this 2 piece from Lanvin may sound kind of out there...shear white, backless, Lycra bodysuit with asymmetrical side cutouts and a semi opaque tuxedo skirt. The minute I saw this, I knew it was going to be amazing! Once paired with the stunning Chanel fine jewelry (complete with not 1 but 2 bodyguards) the over all look was complete. Absolutely one of my favorites.

SuperBowl Sunday was a great day for football and R&B divas. Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce with Destiny's Child all gave electrifying performances. Keys set the bar high, kicking off the show with her rendition of the National Anthem. The Girl On Fire artist wore a red Azzedine Alaia body-con dress with Marina B jewelry styled by Laura Jones for Starworks Artists. Jones had this to say about her styling inspiration for the big day:

I knew this was going to be one of Alicia's finest performances and she needed a dress that made her look and feel proud, beautiful and confident.

Mission Accomplished!

Jessica Paré of Mad Men. Makeup by Mai Quynh for Starworks Artists.

jessica pare tutorial

I wanted Jessica to look graceful, but modern. Jessica's natural beauty shines through while keeping the focal point on her eyes. My inspiration came from the forest green chiffon dress. It's classic couture with bad girl edge speaks to the regal essence of the overall look.

SKINCARE: Her skin was given a good dose of hydration with CHANEL Hydra Beauty Serum followed by CHANEL Sublimage Essential Regenerating Fluid and CHANEL Sublimage La Crème Yeux.

FOUNDATION: I used a combination of CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF15 on the high planes of the face and added a littleCHANEL Perfection Lumiere Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 through the center of the face to give a silky complexion.

BLUSH: On the apples of her cheeks, I lightly dusted CHANEL Powder Blush in Star Dust. I then added CHANEL Poudre Signée De Chanel Illuminating Powder above the cheekbones and a tiny amount on the bridge of the nose to add dimension and illumination.

EYE SHADOW: The eyes were the big focus of this look! Using CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystic Eyes, I added depth to Jessica's eye shape by using the bronze shade on her entire lid and blended it very softly upwards and outwards. On the inner lid, I mixed the light beige and soft pink shade and applied it as a highlighter to the inner eye. Then, I smudged the dark chocolate shade along her top and bottom lash line, blending this color into the bronze shadow. I rimmed her eyes with CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Espresso

LASHES: I curled the lashes and added two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara Waterproof in Noir to her top and bottom lashes. I added individual lashes to finish the look.

LIPS: I mixed CHANEL Rouge Coco in Chalys and Rouge Allure in Gracile to customize the perfect shade to go with her eyes.

Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Lining's Playbook. Hair by Mark Townsend for Starworks Artists.

jennifer lawrence tutorial

I was inspired by Old Hollywood glamour, so I wanted Jennifer's hair to show that influence and inspiration, but I wanted it to be young and very modern as well.

HAIR CARE: I started by applying a nickel size amount of the new Dove Color Care Leave On Conditioner into Jennifer's damp hair; she's colored her hair so much lately so her hair needs added moisture and protection.

WAVES: I loaded her hair with the Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse and blow dried with a large round brush. To give her hair a loose wave, I wrapped sections of hair varying from 2 to 5 inches around a 1 1/4 inch curling iron, leaving the ends out.

SHINE: Then, I took a small amount of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands, rubbed my hands together and then raked my fingers through the waves to break them up and give the hair amazing shine.

TEXTURE: I then took the hair from the right side, twisted it and then pinned it in the back with a few bobby pins. To give the hair a cool, lived-in texture I sprayed Oribe Dry Texture Spray from mid-length to ends and scrunched with my hands.

HOLD: As always, I finished by spraying Dove Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray liberally all over to keep her hair in place all night and give the hair even more shine."

Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey. Hair by Mara Roszak for Starworks Artists.

michelle dockery tutorial

For me, the process always starts with the dress. With Michelle, her stylist [Micaela Erlanger] saw the vintage Ralph Rucci dress about a week before the awards. The dress is from the '90s, Micaela said; it’s kind of a recent vintage piece. I would say it's that kind of cool, '90s vibe.

Michelle already had this new bob haircut that’s kind of '90s—ugh, I think that '90s bob is so awesome! So, I pulled images of other chops of a similar shape [photo 5], and pictures of Winona, other models and actresses from that era, and brought those to discuss with her, and then we, as a group, came up with a slightly sleeker, more structure feel.

CLEAN PART: The first thing I did was part her hair. I wanted the part to be really, really clean—super straight—because the dress has really straight lines. It’s always good to part the hair when it’s wet because when you try to do it after it's dry, it doesn’t stay. I blew it dry off her face, on the side that we knew we were going to tuck back behind her ear.

SOFT CURLED BOB: I pin-curled the hair to give it some volume and texture and movement, let that set for a couple of minutes, sprayed it lightly with Moroccan Oil Hairspray, which is a light-hold hairspray. Then I went back in and used a couple of T3 Hot Rollers, which are really awesome, and replaced the pin curls with those. Then, I let it all out and added a few bobby pins to make sure the hair would stay tucked under on one side.

SLICKED BACK SIDE: I added a little bit of texture with more hairspray—I just spray it on the palm of my hand and scrunch the hair—and used the tiniest bit of gel on my finger, just running it over the top layer of hair to smooth down any flyaways. Michelle has amazing hair; it really does what you want it to do, so I'm lucky in that department.

Nicole Vitagliano Opens Up for SHK Magazine

nicole vitagliano shk

Starworks Artists fashion stylist Nicole Vitagliano sits down with Andrew Sulzer and SeenHeardKnown for the online magazine's inaugural issue. In the interview Vitagliano reveals what designer's runway show made her jaw drop, the quiet perks of working with kids and why she'll always be a behind-the-scene's kinda stylist:

"I met one of my idols, and he told me -- pull back, don't be constantly photographed at parties (or anywhere). Sell the clothes, not yourself! Take your work seriously, and let it represent you. 'You can't be a pimp and a prostitute.'"

In a world where fashion stylists are becoming household names, Vitagliano is fine with staying low-key and focusing on her work. It's a trait that gives her editorials a mysterious strength and makes candid interviews like this all the more special.

twilight press wall

The time has finally come to take out our faux fangs, hang up our TeamEdward/TeamJacob jerseys and bid adieu to the Twilight series. Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 hits theaters today and with it comes the end of Bella's tale of werewolves, vampires and secret societies. There's no doubt the Cullens make a stylish vampire family. And it got us to thinking about other trendsetting bloodsuckers of movies past. Below we've compiled a list of some of our favorite not-so-forgotten vampires:

Brad Pitt & Tom Cruise, "Interview with a Vampire"

brad pitt tom cruise vamps

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt have never been in better form! The skin color, the lip color…if only that color worked on me. The hair is ridiculously sexy for being so long. It's perfection. Watching Interview was the only time I wondered why I live in this world and not the one with the vamps!

Kris Zero, Starworks Artists fashion stylist

Jonathan Frid, "Dark Shadows" TV Show

jonathan frid dark shadows

I was obsessed with Barnabas Collins from Dark Shadows as a kid and wore my father's high collared 70's shirts and neckties to school to imitate him. Barnabas knew the effects of "power dressing" and how a tailored look with all the trimmings could invoke authority and confidence. Prada's FW12 men's collection brought this sartorial historicism back into the conversation but with a modern twist. Cutting three piece suits out of denim, astrakhan-collar topcoats worn with baroque patterned shirts and pairing them with formal neck wear and mock turtles. Plus who wouldn't want Barnabas's onyx signet ring and wolfs head walking stick! SO COOL it still makes may blood run cold.

Michael Fisher, Starworks Artists fashion stylist

Lauren Hutton, "Once Bitten"

Lauren Hutton

Lauren Hutton is the quintessential downtown vampire with her spectacular and iconic Alaia hooded dress and those nails that mean business. Interestingly enough, Hutton could walk around in 2012 and still look current, fashionable and ageless…just like a vampire.

Cameron Silver, Starworks Artists fashion specialist

Catherine Deneuve, "The Hunger"

catherine deneuve

I love the styling of Catherine Deneuve in The Hunger. She's so gorgeous. I would love to see her character today in a blood red lip and maybe instead of the cat glasses and extreme cat-eye!

Jeannia Robinette, Starworks Artists makeup artists

Kiefer Sutherland and co., "Lost Boys"

boys of lost boys

The grungy cool kid fashion of Lost Boys is still seen today on runways and warehouse parties the world round. From the cross earrings to the long black trenches to the big 80's hair; the movie is so iconic and recognizable. We'd all be vampires if we could look so cool.
