HAIR

INSPIRATION: Rebecca's look was inspired by her dress. It was a cool long sleeved black Prada dress with a silver zip up the front. It was chic and classic but it also had a bit of an edge too. We decided to play off of that style and give Rebecca a tousled, rock 'n' roll hairstyle.

STEP 1: Prep towel dried hair using Tresemme 24 Hour Body Blow Dry Lotion. Spritz throughout the hair to add extra body into the hair. Then blow dry hair roughly using hands, this will give the hair a bit of an edge and encourage the hair's natural wave (If your hair is really coarse or curly, use a paddle brush to help smooth the hair out a bit).

STEP 2: Begin to create the wave pattern. I pulled small - medium sections and sprayed them using Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer spray (This will help protect the hair from excess heat from the curling iron). Then I wrapped the hair around the iron to create the wave. When I released the hair from the iron I gave the hair a light pull, while it was still warm, to help settle the "roundness" of the curl. This gives the hair a kind of loose undone texture. I continued this technique throughout the head. Starting from the back and working my way forward.

STEP 3: Once curling is complete, use your hands to loosen up the waves and add some texture to the hair. I created a side parting and tucked one side behind the ear. I finished by spraying the style using Tresemma Climate Control Finishing Spray to ensure the hair held its cool, piece-y texture.

MAKEUP

THE INSPIRATION: We wanted her eyes to be the focus. The slightest nod to rock and roll yet still pretty. This was accomplished quite simply.

STEP 1: To start I covered her whole lid with Laura Mercier Matte Eye Colour in Vanilla Nuts. This blankets the lid like a clean slate of canvas. Then I lined her inner lids both bottom and top with MAC Eye Kohl pencil in Smolder. This black pencil has the best staying power. However I purposely did it early so it would water down and soften by the time she appeared on the red carpet, our nod to Rock and Roll.

STEP 2: Next on her upper lids just about into the eye brow I brushed Jouer powder eyeshadow in Bordeaux. This wine color has perfect sheen and darkens the lid enough. Since Rebecca has hazel/ gold eyes this would bring out there color. I also swept it underneath her bottom lashes.

STEP 3: At the lash line I lined her upper lashes with Votre Vu Le Joli Crayon in Aubergine for some plum staying power and then traced over that with my favorite MAC Eye Shadow in Sketch. This darkens the eye enough but doesnt make it too heavy.

STEP 4: I used Benefit Get Bent mascara in Black on both bottom and top lashes to widen the eye and there u go. She's done.

>STEP 5:** I blushed her cheeks with MAC Powder Blush in Prism, a perfectly reliable staple. And used NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Isola Bella. Just enough lip to show up so the look is updated.

Rebecca is so much fun because she's confident with a great sense of humor. On the carpet all I could see was that she carried herself beautifully.

Emily Vancamp - FASHION April 2013

emily vancamp

I love working with Emily! She's so cool and easy to get on with. We shot this cover story at Siren Studios in Hollywood. The hair inspiration for the cover look was full bodied waves with a great side swept bang; a very "cover worthy" style. After we shot a few cover looks in studio, photog James White decided that we should go for an edgier and more moody look for the inside shots. We moved the shooting location into the stairway of the studio which really lent to a more gritty vibe. We did a couple of hair looks there. The first look was kept down (kind of like the cover) but the texture was more piece-y and tousled and the wardrobe changed to a darker palette. Then we did a great up style, that they used on the inside. We all just LOVED the moody set up!

Ashley Benson - Seventeen April 2013

ashley benson

Ashley's wardrobe for the Seventeen shoot was red, white and blue and very American. So, I thought it would be fun to go peaches-and-cream for her makeup. I used Chantelcaille Cheek Shade in Wind to create her skins peachy tone and finished the look off with Ashley's signature smokey eye. She looked pretty and friendly, perfect for a day shoot.  We shot at a ranch and I remember it was freezing that day. The whole crew was in down jackets and boots and Ashley was in cut-off shorts and tank tops. You'd never know from how happy she looks.

SWA makeup artist Mai Quynh.

Juno Temple - WONDERLAND Feb/March 2013

juno temple

Juno is so naturally cool!  She walked in with a gigantic coat on and the most amazing flowing wild red hair and I just wanted to spotlight her natural coolness! I used Fekkai COIFF Bouffant-Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel, which is my go-to product when I want to create a matte messy texture and volume at the same time.  Then I used my fingers to rough dry the product in with my fingers.  There was no brush used the whole day! Then I used my other favorite product which is ORIBE Dry Texturizing Spray all over from roots to ends.  It was a very overcast chilly Sunday morning and everyone was very sleepy and moving slow.  Then Juno walked in with a huge smile and her electric hair and it felt like the sun had just started to shine!

SWA hairstylist Aviva.

Hayden Panettiere, NYLON April 2013

hayden panettiere

The wardrobe from the Nylon shoot were very 80's; colorful and fun. I knew I wanted to do a raw/cool look for the makeup and focused a lot of attention on the eye. I used a lot of black eyeliner and elongated the eye using eye shadows. We left the rest of the face raw to make sure the look stayed young and fresh. I think it went great with the 80's glam clothes.

Agyness Deyn, InStyle Magazine UK - March 2013

aggy deyn cover

This 60's mod story was inspired by Andy Warhol and the factory girls. We also loved the Marc Jacobs spring 2013 runway look. To create the texture I used Bumble and bumble styling lotion along with some REDKEN Powder Grip.

Kevin Bacon, TV Guide - Jan 21-27 2013

kevin bacon

Kevin's character on The Following wears a dark blue suit. TV Guide wanted to reference that but wanted something more vivid. This Ovadia & Sons suit is the perfect, brilliant blue and made his eyes pop. No pun intended and if you've seen the show you'll know what I mean.

Menswear stylist Michael Fisher for Starworks Artists

Elle Fanning, BULLETT Magazine - Winter 2013

elle fanning

For this shoot, I wanted her eyes to be the main focus on her face. I wanted it to have a shiny, dewy texture. So I started with NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Bouthan. I mixed the two pink shadows and applied it on her eyelid, and then added Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on top to make it glossy. The rest of her face, I kept minimal. I knew that the photographer [Pierre Debusschere] would photoshop a lot of graphics in (he's known for that), so I thought the glossy eye would add a nice soft texture to the pictures.

Aubrey Plaza, ASOS Magazine - March 2013

aubrey plaza

This was a fun shoot day. The makeup was pretty natural besides a few bold lipstick changes, but it was the energy between Aubrey and photographer Danielle Levitt that was entertaining and fun to be around. They had us laughing all day!

Makeup artist Jenn Streicher for Starworks Artists

Bella Heathcote, 7 Hollywood - Fall/Winter 2013

bella heathcote

They wanted a Jean Shrimpton vibe for this shoot, which I love. So I played up her eyes by adding a little dimension in her crease using Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in 47 Dunes. I used the soft brown in her crease and smudged it along her lower lashes. Then I added  MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in White 0 to her inner eyelid as a highlighter. This shadow is matte, so it gave a nice opaque white. I added a full strip of lashes from Ardell and then applied a few coats of YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara in High Density Black to her top and bottom lashes. Finally, I added Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink along her upper lash line. I used soft rosy nudes for her blush and lips.

Makeup artist Mai Quynh for Starworks Artists.

Dave Franco, Wonderland Magazine - February/March 2013

dave franco

Dave is always so easy to work with. Laid back, funny and easy on the eyes it doesn't take much to make him camera ready. I used the La Mer Tinted Moisturizer on his skin, a little lip balm, brush throw his brow and he is set. In his hair, just some Bumble & bumble sumotech for texture. That particular day was a sunny (warm out of the shade) winters day. We laughed and had fun taking pictures. Not a bad days work.

Makeup artist Adam Breuchaud for Starworks Artists

Emily Vancamp, Women's Health - February 2013

emily vancamp

I'm not really sure what my inspiration was I just wanted Emily's beautiful brown eyes to stand out. I had just received a bronzed eyeshadow palette from Tarte. It was perfect for Emily. So I built out the shadow so her eyes stood out and the gold in her eyes was picked up. I kept her cheeks warm with a Jouer blush and a Jouer gloss. She looked healthy and approachable. Just like Emily herself.

Gigi Hadid, GUESS Magazine - Spring/Summer 2013

guess cover

For the spring/summer 2013 guess campaign I had the good fortune to shoot in beautiful Bora Bora.  It wasn't hard to be inspired by this magical place and the stunningly gorgeous Gigi Hadid. Basically, before make up, Gigi and I would walk to the water and I would have her submerge her whole head in the ocean. I  set her hair in medium sized braids all over her head. After makeup and within minutes in the hot south pacific sun, her hair would be completely dry. I then shook out the braids and added a touch of Amika Sea Buckthorn Berry oil Treatment mostly to her ends. Super easy.

(To achieve a similar look in the studio I would've used Bumble & bumble surf spray, a blow dryer then touched up a few strands with a 1 inch curling iron.)

Hairstylist John Ruggiero for Starworks Artists

Kid Cudi, COMPLEX Magazine - February 2013

kid cudi

The shoot was fashioned after a "futuristic rebirth" - I loved working with Scott aka "Cudi." I have been a fan of his for many years. We had a super successful shoot - we shot several different setups and he and I love vintage as well as Balmain - needless to say we had an awesome DJ on set - what a fun day. It has been a career goal of mine for 5 years now to work with Kid Cudi. Mission accomplished!

Hailee Steinfeld, FASHION Magazine - March 2013

GET THE LOOK!

Jessica Paré of Mad Men. Makeup by Mai Quynh for Starworks Artists.

jessica pare tutorial

I wanted Jessica to look graceful, but modern. Jessica's natural beauty shines through while keeping the focal point on her eyes. My inspiration came from the forest green chiffon dress. It's classic couture with bad girl edge speaks to the regal essence of the overall look.

SKINCARE: Her skin was given a good dose of hydration with CHANEL Hydra Beauty Serum followed by CHANEL Sublimage Essential Regenerating Fluid and CHANEL Sublimage La Crème Yeux.

FOUNDATION: I used a combination of CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF15 on the high planes of the face and added a littleCHANEL Perfection Lumiere Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 through the center of the face to give a silky complexion.

BLUSH: On the apples of her cheeks, I lightly dusted CHANEL Powder Blush in Star Dust. I then added CHANEL Poudre Signée De Chanel Illuminating Powder above the cheekbones and a tiny amount on the bridge of the nose to add dimension and illumination.

EYE SHADOW: The eyes were the big focus of this look! Using CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystic Eyes, I added depth to Jessica's eye shape by using the bronze shade on her entire lid and blended it very softly upwards and outwards. On the inner lid, I mixed the light beige and soft pink shade and applied it as a highlighter to the inner eye. Then, I smudged the dark chocolate shade along her top and bottom lash line, blending this color into the bronze shadow. I rimmed her eyes with CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Espresso

LASHES: I curled the lashes and added two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara Waterproof in Noir to her top and bottom lashes. I added individual lashes to finish the look.

LIPS: I mixed CHANEL Rouge Coco in Chalys and Rouge Allure in Gracile to customize the perfect shade to go with her eyes.

Makeup Artist Mai Quynh for Starworks Artists

Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Lining's Playbook. Hair by Mark Townsend for Starworks Artists.

jennifer lawrence tutorial

I was inspired by Old Hollywood glamour, so I wanted Jennifer's hair to show that influence and inspiration, but I wanted it to be young and very modern as well.

HAIR CARE: I started by applying a nickel size amount of the new Dove Color Care Leave On Conditioner into Jennifer's damp hair; she's colored her hair so much lately so her hair needs added moisture and protection.

WAVES: I loaded her hair with the Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse and blow dried with a large round brush. To give her hair a loose wave, I wrapped sections of hair varying from 2 to 5 inches around a 1 1/4 inch curling iron, leaving the ends out.

SHINE: Then, I took a small amount of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands, rubbed my hands together and then raked my fingers through the waves to break them up and give the hair amazing shine.

TEXTURE: I then took the hair from the right side, twisted it and then pinned it in the back with a few bobby pins. To give the hair a cool, lived-in texture I sprayed Oribe Dry Texture Spray from mid-length to ends and scrunched with my hands.

HOLD: As always, I finished by spraying Dove Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray liberally all over to keep her hair in place all night and give the hair even more shine."

Hairstylist Mark Townsend for Starworks Artists

Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey. Hair by Mara Roszak for Starworks Artists.

michelle dockery tutorial

For me, the process always starts with the dress. With Michelle, her stylist [Micaela Erlanger] saw the vintage Ralph Rucci dress about a week before the awards. The dress is from the '90s, Micaela said; it’s kind of a recent vintage piece. I would say it's that kind of cool, '90s vibe.

Michelle already had this new bob haircut that’s kind of '90s—ugh, I think that '90s bob is so awesome! So, I pulled images of other chops of a similar shape [photo 5], and pictures of Winona, other models and actresses from that era, and brought those to discuss with her, and then we, as a group, came up with a slightly sleeker, more structure feel.

CLEAN PART: The first thing I did was part her hair. I wanted the part to be really, really clean—super straight—because the dress has really straight lines. It’s always good to part the hair when it’s wet because when you try to do it after it's dry, it doesn’t stay. I blew it dry off her face, on the side that we knew we were going to tuck back behind her ear.

SOFT CURLED BOB: I pin-curled the hair to give it some volume and texture and movement, let that set for a couple of minutes, sprayed it lightly with Moroccan Oil Hairspray, which is a light-hold hairspray. Then I went back in and used a couple of T3 Hot Rollers, which are really awesome, and replaced the pin curls with those. Then, I let it all out and added a few bobby pins to make sure the hair would stay tucked under on one side.

SLICKED BACK SIDE: I added a little bit of texture with more hairspray—I just spray it on the palm of my hand and scrunch the hair—and used the tiniest bit of gel on my finger, just running it over the top layer of hair to smooth down any flyaways. Michelle has amazing hair; it really does what you want it to do, so I'm lucky in that department.
