INSTAGRAM ROUNDUP: Mindy Kaling x American Idol
April 4, 2013 11:11 PM
(photos courtesy of Instagram)
It's ironic Mindy Kaling has such disdain for the phrase "girl crush," because that's exactly what we have for the primetime star. From her multi-hyphenated role as producer/writer/star of the FOX hit, The Mindy Project, to her vivid personal life which she graciously shares on Instagram and Twitter; we can't get enough of the comedienne.
Needless to say, we almost fell out of our seats this afternoon when the former Office star gave a shout out to one of our favorite hairstylist over Instagram! Seems, Ms. Kaling attended today's taping of American Idol and enlisted Starworks Artists hairstylist Sascha Breuer to whip her up a showstopping 'do for the occasion. We checked in with the celebrity coiffeur for details on his sexy hair creation.
I love this look as it is fresh and fun and works for all types of hair; wavy, straight or curly. The 60's sexy feeling makes it the perfect look for a night out and was inspired by Bridget Bardot.
Start off by misting your hair with bumble and bumble surf spray at the roots. ( can be used on wet or dry hair )
Using a vent brush and blow-dry the roots in a backwards direction to achieve loose volume at the roots.
Once hair is dry, gently tease and backcomb roots at the back of the head for added lift and hold. Use a soft brush to smooth out the outer surface of the hair.
Gather the hair into a loose high sitting ponytail and make sure to leave out a few strands to softly frame the face.
To finish, mist with hairspray and tease with your fingers for a lived in feeling.
Et voila, 60's sex kitten hair in seconds ...

SPLITTING HAIRS: Sascha Breuer Decodes the Dual Hair Trend
March 27, 2013 10:12 AMOne of the boldest Spring hair trends appearing on runways and red carpets alike is DUAL HAIR. Whether it be long/short, wet/dry or masculine/feminine, combining two contradictory hairstyles is one of the trickiest and bravest looks we've seen in a long time. Starworks Artists hairstylist Sascha Breuer recently created a dual hairstyle for Marley Shelton's Hansel and Gretel premiere appearance that was part Screen Siren, part The Clash and all over glam! We chatted with the hair pro about creating the extreme look and why he thinks the dual hair trend is having such a moment.
"The look is really a continuation for what we've been seeing for the past couple Spring seasons on the runway. This slicked-back or pushed-back hair trend. Lately the trend has been taking on a more glamorous feel."
On the runway...
"We've also seen this look on stars like Rihanna and Cassie but with the hair actually razored to create the look. The beauty of the slick back is you can get the same look without shaving half of your head."

Rihanna's Rolling Stone cover, Singer Cassie, Chanel's S/S '13 ads featuring Alice Dellal
"When you perfectly blow dry one side of the head and create a harder edge for the other, it instantly updates both looks. Giving the glam side more edge and adding femininity to the strict under cut look."

Marley Shelton, Hansel and Gretel premiere. Hair by Sascha Breuer for Starworks Artists.
"The inspiration for the look I did for Marley was Veronica Lake…if she were a punk rocker."
GET THE LOOK:
Casually blow dry hair.
Decide which side of the head you'd like to create the slick look. Make a very low side part that goes from the temple all the way to the back of the head; ending underneath the crown. Make sure to follow the shape of the hairline.
Use a soft bristle brush to get the hair to lay as flat as possible against the head while spritzing finely with hairspray. I recommend WELLA System Professional Hairspray.
Once the hair is flat, pull the ponytail tight and bring the end to the other side of the head to be hidden under you longer hair. Try to tie the ponytail directly behind the opposite ear.
Once finished. Start to spritz the hair more liberally to get the "wet" look. Surpisingly, this look isn't made by using any gels. It's all hairspray! The more you add the more "wet" the hair will look.

CREATING THE SHAPE: Center part the hair and from the hairline begin to back comb the roots with a spritz of Redken Quick Tease to make it easier. Work backwards down the the nape, spraying each section with Quick Tease and lightly back combing the roots for foundation.
THE MESSY LOOK: Next, directionally back comb the sides towards the nape too. Lightly brush over the surface of the hair with a Mason and Pearson to smooth any really messy areas but remembering you want a slightly tousled look. Then spray the mid lengths and end lightly with Quick Tease for grip.
BUILDING THE BUN: Divide the hair in three and form three little buns of hair at the nape (a bun is created by twisting the hair and wrapping it around itself and pinning into place). Keep pinning bits of hair into place and mould the hair into a messy design of your choice.
ALL NIGHT HOLD: Next finish with a generous amount of Pureology Hairspray to fix the style into place and to rid any fly aways.

FRONT ROW BANDIT: Hailee Steinfed Edition
September 11, 2012 02:13 PM
We're just gonna go ahead and nickname Hailee Steinfeld "The Little Ingenue That Could!" The True Grit star is making a name for herself during the fall collections; landing front-row spots at coveted shows like Tommy Hilfiger, Peter Som and Marc Jacobs to name a few. What else is a girl to do on her time off? (Steinfeld has four feature films slated for release next year). As if she hasn't already been stamped with the title Fashion Star, Teen Vogue appointed her their official liaison for NYFW. What a perfect choice! Throughout her busy week, Steinfeld relied on Starworks Artists for her hair and makeup story. See below for some of our favorite looks:
