THROWBACK THURSDAYS: What My Mother Taught Me
May 9, 2013 02:30 PM
(photo courtesy of D Magazine. Makeup by Kristee Liu for Starworks Artists)
Whether it's the perfume she wore, the way she styled her hair or the quick flick with which she applied her mascara; a mother's beauty routine is often one of the fondest memories passed down to her children. With Mother's Day approaching, we asked our Starworks Artists to reveal some of their mother's style and beauty tricks that they still embrace today.
My mom definitely set me up for success as a hairstylist. When I was a kid, my sisters and I all danced. And in order for us all to be "ready to go" the day of a recital, my mom put me in charge of putting in the rollers. But to be efficient, we did them the night before. So, after everyone had bathed and the hair was towel dried. I rolled up a bunch of pink sponge rollers in all 3 of my sisters hair! At the time, I had NO idea that that would set the tone for my current path. I've been hairstyling since I was kid, thanks ma!
- Hairstylist John D
My mom taught me the importance of caring for my skin. She showed me how to moisturize my face when I was only a few years old, by making small dots with moisturizer then blend upwards. She made sure I never forget to do the same with my neck and hands. My mom said a woman should never reveal her true age and her neck and hands, without being taken care of, will be the two places that may spill the secret.
- Makeup artist Kristee Liu
My mother taught me to love unconditionally, to always believe in myself and treat others how you want to be treated. I can’t think of what better defines my personal style than that.
- Fashion stylist Michael Fisher
My Mom has been insisting I wear 'a little lipstick' all of my life, probably even before the age at which it was appropriate to do so. She knows I love the feeling (not the look) of having my hair brushed, so I'll sometimes concede on that. Its also quite normal for me to wake up from a nap at her house and find that someone has put lotion and socks on my feet. So, Mom, thanks for being so lovingly creepy, you make me a better woman.
- Fashion stylist Nicole Vitagliano
What my Mom taught me was to always make the effort. Though she never wore full makeup but NEVER left the house without putting on lipstick. A little league game, grocery shopping, whatever...she had lipstick on. For me this has translated into taking an extra second before I leave to assess how I look, add some eye drops, change my shirt or throw some pommade in my hair. Always make the effort. U never know who you'll run into.
- Makeup artists Stephen Sollitto
I definitely owe my creative and visual sense to my mother. She is an amazing artist and sculpted stone for many years. I recently put together how similar styling hair is to sculpting. Her ability to see the beauty in most things, and creating shapes out of a blank canvas has always and will always be an inspiration. My mother is a true artist, through and through, i can only strive to be that as well.
- Hairstylist Mara Roszak

My mother had the most inspiring vintage style. I think it speaks for itself. (Photos featured above)
- Fashion stylist Jenny Ricker
I always sat and watched my mom get ready when she went out... her beautiful red hair, make-up and clothes were always impeccably put together. I remember asking her why she spent so much time getting ready, she answered, "If you take time for yourself it will always show." I try to remember this always...
- Hairstylist Laini Reeves
My mom has always had classic style with flair.... She loves the Burberry Scarf and Trench, the Chanel Jackets and Ballet Flats but she ALWAYS added her own touch....Shoes with faces (like the marc jacobs mouse, or the YSL lips), or wearing a fur with her hair done in corn rows.... she always had a sense of humor and was clearly always doing her OWN thing. This made her fun, it made people around her smile and of course taught me fearlessness and fun in fashion. Thanks MOM! HAppy Mothers Day!
- Fashion stylist Kris Zero
My mom is actually quite understated with her personal "style" and some would even call it plain. She always told us to treat others how we want to be treated. She also would say that it's not how a person looks or how much money they make that's important, its their heart. That to me is the most stylish and beautiful thing my mother has taught me. Xxoo

BUY, KEEP, TOSS: Spring Makeup
April 30, 2013 10:38 AM
Navigating the ever-changing landscape of beauty trends can be a hefty task for even the most glamour obsessed. Luckily, we have a pro team here to guide the way. With warmer months ahead, we asked some of our makeup aficionados what products we should be adding to our arsenal, carrying over from last season and tossing out with yesterday's newspaper! Read on for their BUY, KEEP, TOSS picks.

BUY: Blush Nude Lipstick by Tom Ford. It's the perfect pouty lip color and I couldn't be more obsessed.
KEEP: BRONZERS - as we are going into spring everyone wants that color back in their cheeks and CHANEL makes the most awesome bronze products. My 3 favorite are the Sun Soleil which is a bronzed creme whip - Sun Brillance which is a liquid sheen (in contour of cheeks and down nose it's like a face lift ) and Sun Soleil Powder bronzer powder.
TOSS: DARK BLUSHES - it's all about a light fresh blush in the apple of the cheek. I have been seeing people wearing heavy blushes all the way through contour of cheek and it's overwhelming and out of fashion.
- Celeb makeup artist Nico Guilis

BUY: INVISIBLE FACE POWDER. A shine free face doesnt have to be chalky or heavily made up with these revolutionary new invisible shine busters. Dewy skin is great where the skin is tight to the bone, but for the sides of the nose, chin and forehead I Love Laura Mercier Invisible Loose Setting Powder. Forget everything you know about powder and give this a try.
KEEP: LIP TINTS/GELS are always handy through spring and summertime and consistently look great. Layer a transparent gloss or balm over the top for a succulent looking pout. BECCA Beach Tint is great and comes in 8 shades!
TOSS: GLITTERY BRONZERS - Anything that sparkles or has visible particles. Instead you should be looking for a warm glow. CHANEL Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Color SPF15 can be swept all over the face to add a luminosity, or used 2-3 shades darker to give a modern, fresh "one day in the sun" type glow.
- Celeb makeup artist Kate Lee

BUY: COLORED EYELINER PENCILS. The blue eyeliner we saw last season was just the beginning of this trend. Inspired by the runway looks from Donna Karen, Christian Dior and Kenzo, a dash of color on the eyes is perfect for spring time. Aqua Eyes by Make Up For Ever comes in a variety of colors and it's fade-resistant. Whether its emerald green or turquoise, you'll have a lot of fun wearing this look.
KEEP: TINTED MOISTURIZERS. Fresh, flawless skin has been a trend and is here to stay (for a while). You may need to get it in a shade darker than your winter color but less is definitely more when it comes to skin in the spring time. My favorite is the Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 by Laura Mercier.
TOSS: MATTE, DARK LIP COLORS. Spring is all about color but it's time to say good bye to those deep colors with matte texture, which can dull down the face. Of course you can still wear colors like berry and wine but just make sure to choose ones with sheer texture so the look is fresh and flirty.

GET THE LOOK!
Jessica Paré of Mad Men. Makeup by Mai Quynh for Starworks Artists.

I wanted Jessica to look graceful, but modern. Jessica's natural beauty shines through while keeping the focal point on her eyes. My inspiration came from the forest green chiffon dress. It's classic couture with bad girl edge speaks to the regal essence of the overall look.
SKINCARE: Her skin was given a good dose of hydration with CHANEL Hydra Beauty Serum followed by CHANEL Sublimage Essential Regenerating Fluid and CHANEL Sublimage La Crème Yeux.
FOUNDATION: I used a combination of CHANEL Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF15 on the high planes of the face and added a littleCHANEL Perfection Lumiere Long-Wear Flawless Fluid Sunscreen Makeup Broad Spectrum SPF 15 through the center of the face to give a silky complexion.
BLUSH: On the apples of her cheeks, I lightly dusted CHANEL Powder Blush in Star Dust. I then added CHANEL Poudre Signée De Chanel Illuminating Powder above the cheekbones and a tiny amount on the bridge of the nose to add dimension and illumination.
EYE SHADOW: The eyes were the big focus of this look! Using CHANEL Quadra Eyeshadow in Mystic Eyes, I added depth to Jessica's eye shape by using the bronze shade on her entire lid and blended it very softly upwards and outwards. On the inner lid, I mixed the light beige and soft pink shade and applied it as a highlighter to the inner eye. Then, I smudged the dark chocolate shade along her top and bottom lash line, blending this color into the bronze shadow. I rimmed her eyes with CHANEL Stylo Yeux Waterproof Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Espresso.
LASHES: I curled the lashes and added two coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara Waterproof in Noir to her top and bottom lashes. I added individual lashes to finish the look.
LIPS: I mixed CHANEL Rouge Coco in Chalys and Rouge Allure in Gracile to customize the perfect shade to go with her eyes.
Makeup Artist Mai Quynh for Starworks Artists
Jennifer Lawrence of Silver Lining's Playbook. Hair by Mark Townsend for Starworks Artists.

I was inspired by Old Hollywood glamour, so I wanted Jennifer's hair to show that influence and inspiration, but I wanted it to be young and very modern as well.
HAIR CARE: I started by applying a nickel size amount of the new Dove Color Care Leave On Conditioner into Jennifer's damp hair; she's colored her hair so much lately so her hair needs added moisture and protection.
WAVES: I loaded her hair with the Dove Style+Care Nourishing Curls Whipped Cream Mousse and blow dried with a large round brush. To give her hair a loose wave, I wrapped sections of hair varying from 2 to 5 inches around a 1 1/4 inch curling iron, leaving the ends out.
SHINE: Then, I took a small amount of Dove Frizz-Free Shine Cream-Serum in my hands, rubbed my hands together and then raked my fingers through the waves to break them up and give the hair amazing shine.
TEXTURE: I then took the hair from the right side, twisted it and then pinned it in the back with a few bobby pins. To give the hair a cool, lived-in texture I sprayed Oribe Dry Texture Spray from mid-length to ends and scrunched with my hands.
HOLD: As always, I finished by spraying Dove Strength & Shine Extra Hold Hairspray liberally all over to keep her hair in place all night and give the hair even more shine."
Hairstylist Mark Townsend for Starworks Artists
Michelle Dockery of Downton Abbey. Hair by Mara Roszak for Starworks Artists.

For me, the process always starts with the dress. With Michelle, her stylist [Micaela Erlanger] saw the vintage Ralph Rucci dress about a week before the awards. The dress is from the '90s, Micaela said; it’s kind of a recent vintage piece. I would say it's that kind of cool, '90s vibe.
Michelle already had this new bob haircut that’s kind of '90s—ugh, I think that '90s bob is so awesome! So, I pulled images of other chops of a similar shape [photo 5], and pictures of Winona, other models and actresses from that era, and brought those to discuss with her, and then we, as a group, came up with a slightly sleeker, more structure feel.
CLEAN PART: The first thing I did was part her hair. I wanted the part to be really, really clean—super straight—because the dress has really straight lines. It’s always good to part the hair when it’s wet because when you try to do it after it's dry, it doesn’t stay. I blew it dry off her face, on the side that we knew we were going to tuck back behind her ear.
SOFT CURLED BOB: I pin-curled the hair to give it some volume and texture and movement, let that set for a couple of minutes, sprayed it lightly with Moroccan Oil Hairspray, which is a light-hold hairspray. Then I went back in and used a couple of T3 Hot Rollers, which are really awesome, and replaced the pin curls with those. Then, I let it all out and added a few bobby pins to make sure the hair would stay tucked under on one side.
SLICKED BACK SIDE: I added a little bit of texture with more hairspray—I just spray it on the palm of my hand and scrunch the hair—and used the tiniest bit of gel on my finger, just running it over the top layer of hair to smooth down any flyaways. Michelle has amazing hair; it really does what you want it to do, so I'm lucky in that department.

SWA 360: Bella Heathcote x G'Day USA Gala
January 16, 2013 10:28 AM
Aussie actress Bella Heathcote stepped out this weekend for the G'Day USA Black Tie Gala. G'Day USA is an organization dedicated to strengthening cultural relationships between Australia and the United States. Heathcote was joined by fellow homelanders like Nicole Kidman, Olivia Newton-John and the 2013 G'Day Honoree, Guy Pearce.
The Not Fade Away star wore a Dolce & Gabbana dress, Christian Louboutin clutch, Nancy Newberg jewels and Casadei shoes. Starworks Artists was honored to handle all aspects of Heathcote's beauty look; making Bella Heathcote the newest member of our SWA360 club!!!
Below we have styling details from Bella's glam team; stylist Penny Lovell, makeup artist Kristee Liu and hairstylist Adir Abergel.

On Bella's Delicately Dramatic Dress:
We loved the black floral appliqué Dolce & Gabbana dress for its dark feminine feel and paired the patent Casadei shoes with their cool architectural lines with it to keep the look edgy and modern.
Stylist Penny Lovell for Starworks Artists.
On Bella's Bold Makeup.
As soon as I saw the dress, Bella and I instantly decided that we were going for a bold lip. Dubonnet lipstick by MAC was the final choice. I wanted to keep the rest of her face soft and simple to compliment her lips and also the structure of the dress. I applied the mid-tone shimmery peachy eyeshadow in the Desert Heat Pure Color palette by Estée Lauder on top of her lids, lined the top using Golden Black smolderEYES Amazonian Clay liner by Tarte, finished with Winks No.9 Belle individual lashes by Georgie Beauty and lots of Gifted mascara by Tarte. A dab of Rose Convertible Color by Stila on the cheeks and High Beam highlighter by Benefit Cosmetics completed the look.
Makeup artist Kristee Liu for Starworks Artists.
On Bella's Soft Waves:
As soon as I saw the dress I knew I wanted to reference Elvira, Michelle Pfieffer's character from Scarface. Bella's growing out her bangs, so instead of putting them down I decided to go with a 60's side-swept bang. I recreated the look by blowdrying the hair smooth and using volumizer on the roots. Then I took a 1-inch curling iron to bend the ends. Voila!
Hairstylist Adir Abergel for Starworks Artists.
