Now that we've had a couple weeks to let this year's September issues seep in (it's still August mind you) our office is abuzz with all the upcoming fashion trends! As one of our senior staffers accurately put it, "Fall '13 is all about the split bootie, fur, embellishment and all things Saint Laurent!" We couldn't agree more.
This year the September issues were BIGGER THAN EVER with some even reaching novel status - we see your 902 pages American Vogue! With that type of coverage there is sure to be some crossover when debuting the it-pieces of the season. We've compiled a short list of the items that seemed to be everywhere over the past two weeks; from red carpet to high-art collaborations and of course the glossy pages of our favorite fashion mags.
Gucci - Feathered Dress: $22,000
Birds of a feather frock together! This Gucci-feather situation first hit our radar back in May when stylist Cher Coulter dressed model/actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley for the MET Ball. Leave it to Coulter to be ahead of the trend. The dress has since been shot on Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker and Nina Dobrev to name a few.

Miu Miu - Polka Dot Scarf: $230
Thank Heavens for the Miu Miu scarf! With fall's emphasis on heavy coats and serious tailoring, this polka-dotted accessory brings a much needed sense of whimsy to the fall fashion landscape. But even more than being shot on models Xiao Wen Ju and Joan Smalls, for Vogue China and ELLE respectively, this may be the most art-inspiring print of the season! Director Hiam Abass commissioned Miu Miu marionette's for the houses featurette series Women's Tales, LOVE magazine created spotted Minnie Mouse ears for their 5th Anniversary cover starring Georgia Jagger and artist Artaksiniya took the scarf obsession to the next level with her colorful illustration.

Saint Laurent - Wool Star Cardigan: $1,290
For all the fashion obsessed searching for a chic way to channel your teen angst, look no further than the star-spangled Saint Laurent wool sweater. The coveted shrug had way too many sightings to count but we narrowed it down to three editorials starring Hollywood phenoms Chloe Moretz, Zoe Deschanel and Amanda Seyfried. Could this be the official sweater of the Fall ingenue?! One thing's for sure, if you're going to rock this look a smoldering glare is your best accessory.

Lanvin - Plate Necklace: $1,195
We admit when we first saw these glam-plates coming down the Lanvin runway last Spring we wondered if they were too "quirky" to be taken seriously by the fashion elite. Yes, Carrie Bradshaw made ghetto-gold nameplate necklaces a thing back in the ots but this is 2013 and these necklaces are huge! Is the world ready to wear their emotions on their…chests? The Fall editors think so! The blingy charms were spotted on the September covers of Seventeen and ELLE magazine and in a colorful Vogue UK shoot with model-of-the-moment Cara Delevigne.

Tom Ford - Zebra Dress: $11,600
Animal prints are back in a major way this fall. It's like designers put the names of every exotic creature in a hat with every fabric known to man and chose at random: Giraffe-print silk trenches at Burberry. Leopard-print wool sweaters at DKNY. Faux snake-skin bikinis at Jeremy Scott!
Perhaps the chicest piece to come out of this fashion mashup comes from luxe master Tom Ford, with his zebra dress. The other contenders never stood a chance against those micro sequins, sheer cutouts and fur spine. Fashion chameleon Rihanna wore it on the set of the new A$AP Rocky video. It also popped up in the editorial pages of W Magazine and in a striking Harper's BAZAAR cover featuring supermodel Christy Turlington and the words "Fashion Runs Wild." Indeed!

Michael Shannon for XOXO - May 2013.
Michael's stature easily lends itself to suiting and his complex nature and the often intense characters he plays are easily referenced. But he has an incredible sense of humor and playfulness too that not always obvious in a photography. Whenever we work together I'm always conscious to have some whimsical options, mixing traditional styles and textiles with colorful accents and patterns. I never want the wardrobe to get too serious.
For the cover of XOXO, Michael wears a wool plaid 3-piece suit by Tom Ford, a barrel cuff dress shirt from Eton of Sweden and the Foulard Big Paisley tie by J.Press.

Sofia Vergara for Cosmopolitan Magazine - June 2013.
This was a dream come true! I've been obsessed with Sofia Vergara and her incredible hair for years so I had to pinch myself when I got the call that I would be working with her and it would be on a COSMO cover with MATTHIAS VRIENS-MCGRATH, I mean, add a wind machine and you have the perfect storm needed to reach hair heaven!

Agyness Deyn, InStyle Magazine UK - March 2013
This 60's mod story was inspired by Andy Warhol and the factory girls. We also loved the Marc Jacobs spring 2013 runway look. To create the texture I used Bumble and bumble styling lotion along with some REDKEN Powder Grip.

Kevin Bacon, TV Guide - Jan 21-27 2013
Kevin's character on The Following wears a dark blue suit. TV Guide wanted to reference that but wanted something more vivid. This Ovadia & Sons suit is the perfect, brilliant blue and made his eyes pop. No pun intended and if you've seen the show you'll know what I mean.

Elle Fanning, BULLETT Magazine - Winter 2013
For this shoot, I wanted her eyes to be the main focus on her face. I wanted it to have a shiny, dewy texture. So I started with NARS Duo Eyeshadow in Bouthan. I mixed the two pink shadows and applied it on her eyelid, and then added Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on top to make it glossy. The rest of her face, I kept minimal. I knew that the photographer [Pierre Debusschere] would photoshop a lot of graphics in (he's known for that), so I thought the glossy eye would add a nice soft texture to the pictures.

Aubrey Plaza, ASOS Magazine - March 2013
This was a fun shoot day. The makeup was pretty natural besides a few bold lipstick changes, but it was the energy between Aubrey and photographer Danielle Levitt that was entertaining and fun to be around. They had us laughing all day!

Bella Heathcote, 7 Hollywood - Fall/Winter 2013
They wanted a Jean Shrimpton vibe for this shoot, which I love. So I played up her eyes by adding a little dimension in her crease using Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in 47 Dunes. I used the soft brown in her crease and smudged it along her lower lashes. Then I added MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow in White 0 to her inner eyelid as a highlighter. This shadow is matte, so it gave a nice opaque white. I added a full strip of lashes from Ardell and then applied a few coats of YSL Volume Effet Faux Cils Mascara in High Density Black to her top and bottom lashes. Finally, I added Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in Black Ink along her upper lash line. I used soft rosy nudes for her blush and lips.

Dave Franco, Wonderland Magazine - February/March 2013
Dave is always so easy to work with. Laid back, funny and easy on the eyes it doesn't take much to make him camera ready. I used the La Mer Tinted Moisturizer on his skin, a little lip balm, brush throw his brow and he is set. In his hair, just some Bumble & bumble sumotech for texture. That particular day was a sunny (warm out of the shade) winters day. We laughed and had fun taking pictures. Not a bad days work.

Emily Vancamp, Women's Health - February 2013
I'm not really sure what my inspiration was I just wanted Emily's beautiful brown eyes to stand out. I had just received a bronzed eyeshadow palette from Tarte. It was perfect for Emily. So I built out the shadow so her eyes stood out and the gold in her eyes was picked up. I kept her cheeks warm with a Jouer blush and a Jouer gloss. She looked healthy and approachable. Just like Emily herself.

Gigi Hadid, GUESS Magazine - Spring/Summer 2013
For the spring/summer 2013 guess campaign I had the good fortune to shoot in beautiful Bora Bora. It wasn't hard to be inspired by this magical place and the stunningly gorgeous Gigi Hadid. Basically, before make up, Gigi and I would walk to the water and I would have her submerge her whole head in the ocean. I set her hair in medium sized braids all over her head. After makeup and within minutes in the hot south pacific sun, her hair would be completely dry. I then shook out the braids and added a touch of Amika Sea Buckthorn Berry oil Treatment mostly to her ends. Super easy.
(To achieve a similar look in the studio I would've used Bumble & bumble surf spray, a blow dryer then touched up a few strands with a 1 inch curling iron.)

Kid Cudi, COMPLEX Magazine - February 2013
The shoot was fashioned after a "futuristic rebirth" - I loved working with Scott aka "Cudi." I have been a fan of his for many years. We had a super successful shoot - we shot several different setups and he and I love vintage as well as Balmain - needless to say we had an awesome DJ on set - what a fun day. It has been a career goal of mine for 5 years now to work with Kid Cudi. Mission accomplished!

Hailee Steinfeld, FASHION Magazine - March 2013
Hailee had just had her sweet sixteen birthday party. It was fun to hear the details of a young girls birthday party and then turn around and see her in high fashion dresses, looking quite glamorous.

Earlier today Glamour Magazine hosted a Q&A session on their Facebook page featuring Redken 5th Avenue NYC Creative Consultant, Tracey Cunningham for Starworks Artists. The hair colorists was a real pro and fielded questions from fans and aspiring colorists from all over America. Below we have a few snippets from the viral interview:
Jennifer: I color my hair and also have it straightened about once a year with the Yuko process. I’m curious what recommendations you have for shampoo/conditioner and styling products that will both maintain the color and keep my hair strong with all I put it through? :)
Hi Jennifer, I suggest you use shampoo and conditioner from Redken Extreme and then twice a week, use Extreme's Strength Builder Plus that is designed to repair and strengthen your hair. When you blow dry, you should use Redken Smooth Lock's Stay Sleek which gives a very polished finish. - Tracey
Olga: I have dark brown hair, but have always dreamed about going lighter. Is there a safe way to lighten may hair without damaging it?
Hi Olga - I would recommend you try Redken's Illumination, a take on the ombre trend - darker at the roots and lighter at the ends. Low commitment. Extremely popular with many of my clients. - Tracey
Nikki: What are your secrets to getting hair color to last?
Hi Nikki - Treat your hair in a salon. Ask for Redken Chemistry to seal in your color. Use Redken Color Extend shampoo and conditioner at home. Avoid very hot water when you shower. - Tracey
Alissa: I have really dry hair, and I use a deep conditioner, but all the flat ironing seems to suck the color and moisture from my hair. What can I do to keep my dark hair dark and shiny?
Hi Alissa - Go to a Redken salon and ask for SEQ Gloss. When you blow dry and flat iron, you need protection so use DuoShield07. - Tracey
Marisa: I dye my hair red.. It does not last long. I don't shampoo everyday to conserve the color but is there other other products to use that won't strip the color so quickly?
Hi Marisa - Red is a commitment and talk to your stylists about the maintenance plan. I recommend my clients come in every one to two weeks for SEQ Gloss. And as for dry shampoo, I love Redken Powder Refresh 01! Here is the tip: After you finish blow drying, spray it at your root areas and it will keep your oiliness at bay. - Tracey.
