AskSWA: George Northwood on Rosie Huntington-Whitely's Covergirl 'Do

SWA EXPERT: George Northwood
STAR ROSTER: Rosie Huntingon-Whitely, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alexa Chung and Cameron Diaz
THE INQUIRY: I love the work George does with Rosie Huntington-Whitely, specifically the ELLE UK September cover shoot. My hair is fine but has very natural wavy texture air dried. What are some simple things I can do to make my hair more full and can this look be achieved with the layered hair I already have?
- Michele; Scottsdale, AZ
THE SOLUTION: This look can be easily achieved with the right styling tools and products. A good mousse like Pureology applied through damp hair especially at the roots will help give the lift whilst blow drying. Rough dry the hair until 90% dry stretching at the root for lift, then take a large ceramic brush and blow dry sections setting on the brush and applying heat. At the end shake through and apply some Redken Quick Tease to the roots for lift (this stuff is amazing and like backcombing in a can).
The cut also makes a big difference, I would advise to grow your layers out and just focus on a grown out fringe and shape around the face with it one length at the back. Layers tend to look a bit dated these days. Instead get your hairdresser to do 'invisible layers', this is a technique I do which involves slicing or razoring the mid lengths and ends of the hair so it still appears one length but give the body and movement needed.

Cameron Diaz for ELLE UK

Cameron Diaz stuns in the December issue of ELLE UK out later this week. The Gambit star talks with Craig McLean about living a double life between LA and London, writing her upcoming food/health/lifestyle book and her funny way of remembering new faces:
I used to remember people by their haircuts. I'm a visual person. But now I have so many faces that I meet on a daily basis that I can't capture all of them.
Starworks Artists hairstylist George Northwood and colorist Tracey Cunningham created Diaz's unforgettable hair story for the ELLE editorial shot by David Slijper.

HAVING A MOMENT: Emma Stone's ELLE Red Carpet Look of the Year
October 26, 2012 02:19 PM
Silverscreen star, Emma Stone, has lots to smile about today. That's because, after compiling votes from all their top fashion and beauty editors, ELLE Magazine has named Stone's appearance at the Paris Spiderman premiere their Top Red Carpet Look of 2012! Congratulations to Emma and her styling team!

Emma's go-to hairstylist, Mara Roszak for Starworks Artists, spoke with ELLE.com's Tommye Fitpatrick back in June about creating the WOW moment:
"I was so incredibly inspired by this dress. The moment we all saw it, we knew it would be an amazing look. Because it was the Paris premiere, I knew I wanted to go for something really glamorous with a classic feel."
To achieve the style, Roszak applied mousse to Emma's towel-dried hair and then rough dried to add texture and hold. "Using a 1-inch barrel iron, I took narrow sections and wrapped the hair around the barrel, released and then pin curled," Roszak says. "I sprayed the pin curls all over with a lightweight hairspray and let it sit for about five minutes. I let the curls out, from the bottom up, and bushed them out lightly with a Mason Pearson brush. While brushing the hair, maintaining the 'S'-wave was key. In the front around the face, I used finger wave clips to keep the shape of the style. I gently teased at the nape of the neck by backcombing with the Mason Pearson, and then pinned one side under, crisscrossing the bobby pins for extra hold." Finally, she says, "I sprayed all over with Moroccanoil Finishing Spray."
To combat the damp weather in Paris last night and to ensure the style lasted through the night, Roszak says, "Pin curling the hair and letting it set is key, along with using the right finishing spray. I like using hairsprays that add shine and hold, but aren't too wet, which helps with humid weather. Keeping the style as dry as possible with dry shampoo helps."
Of keeping Emma's hair shiny and healthy, Roszak adds: "I absolutely love Emma's blonde hair, and what most people don't know is it is her natural color! She occasionally shampoos with a purple shampoo to brighten the color. Blonde hair can be a bit more delicate, and as a blonde myself I always make sure to use a rich moisturizing conditioner at least once a week. I like Moroccanoil's Intense Moisture Mask. It's also great to put the mask on in the shower with a shower cap on and let the steam penetrate the conditioner."
