JOHN D / HAIR

John D has been obsessed with fashion ever since he was a child growing up in Southern California. His bedroom was wallpapered with fashion spreads from Harper’s Bazaar, W and Vogue. Initially, John D was attracted to dance and believed that his fate lie in a professional dance career. Soon after graduating from high school, John D began to focus on something besides dance that could help him stay afloat, and that was hairstyling. Soon after getting jobs at various hair salons throughout the Orange County and Los Angeles area, he realized that he had a natural talent and ability with hair.

During this time, John D was still dancing and traveling throughout Europe and Asia and would continue to work in hair when he would come back to Los Angeles. While on a break from dancing, John D was introduced to a hairstylist that needed an assistant. The hairstylist worked on American Idol and the prospect on working on such a high profile program immediately resonated with John D. Subsequently, he worked on American Idol for two years and then transitioned into working as a hairstylist full time. In 2005, John D was hired as the department head hairstylist for So You Think You Can Dance. It was while working on SYTYCD that John D permanently solidified his love for hair. SYTYCD was perfect for John D and allowed him the opportunity to be a part of something that combined his two favorite talents, dancing and hair. He worked on SYTYCD for four years while freelancing at the same time.

After his tenure with SYTYCD, John D moved to New York City to build up his resume and gain more experience. He quickly found jobs working with some of the top photographers in the business – Hilary Walsh, James White and Peggy Sirota. He has worked with artists such as Natalie Portman, Emily van Camp, Rebecca Hall, Maya Rudolph, Krysten Ritter and Nicole Scherzinger to name a few. His editorial experience is also extensive, having worked with Harper’s Bazaar (UK), Glamour (UK) and People. John D continues to be a most promising and successful artist.

John D draws his inspiration and style from Christy Turlington, Linda Evangalista and Naomi Campbell. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his partner and his three dogs.
